WHEN I'M NOT ALONE
(USA, 2009) Director: Rhianon Gutierrez
Documentary, 21 minutes, captioned
SYNOPSIS
Born female but raised as a male for twenty-eight years, Sam Durbin experienced unspeakable abuse, never learned to read or write, and drifted in and out of institutions. But he's turned his tragedy around and helps others in the process.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
"When I read Sam's book You're Not the Boss of Me, I knew that I had to meet him. The first time that I met him, I interviewed him about sex and relationships. We spoke about the need for parents and the larger public to learn about how people with disabilities perceive sex, gender, and relationships. I wanted to make a film that moved people to ask questions and find the answers."
REVIEWS
