WAYS ON WHEELS
(Canada, 2009) Director: Ken Galloway
Documentary, English, 13 minutes
SYNOPSIS
His name is "Ways" and he was once a fast-moving outlaw artist--a hit-and-run gambler on the British Columbia graffiti scene. But a police chase and a horrific car crash ended his winning streak and left him a quadriplegic. Many of us see graffiti as an unwanted presence in our cities, but Ways now sees it as a reason to live. "Ways On Wheels" brings his story to light. It's a film about tragedy and hope, contribution and redemption. It's about committing crimes in the name of art and finding humanity in the process.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
"I first met Ways by chance at a mural unveiling party in Vancouver and knew right away that there was something very special about him. Three years later, I returned to Western Canada with a film crew from Toronto to shoot "Ways On Wheels" on a shoestring budget. After an intense week of shooting, we returned home extremely pleased with ourselves, only to learn that due to a technical mishap, much of our footage was unusable. Although it would have been very easy to pull the plug on the project at that point, the words on everybody's lips were: "What would Ways have done in this situation?" There was no question that we had to pick ourselves back up and do whatever was necessary to complete the film, so I hope you enjoy the product of our two trips to the Canadian Rockies."
REVIEWS
"A thoughtful, dramatic and surprising take on a subject that's too often reduced to 'misunderstood sub-culture' cliche. This is a vivid piece of filmmaking." - David Godsall, enRoute Magazine
"Simply inspiring. 'Ways On Wheels' shows us that anything is possible as long as you have drive, passion and the will to express yourself." - Sterling Downey, Under Pressure Magazine
